Environmental Awareness for the Youth
Metro Iloilo Water District once again partners with the John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime Academy (JBLFMU), in inspiring and educating the youth on the values of environmentalism–and how human activity affects their environment in both positive and negative ways.
Staff and key members from the MIWD Climate Change Committee attended the JBLFMU Eco-Adventure Youth Camp at the JBLFMU Eco-Park in Guimaras last May 9, 2024, where they also conducted a short lecture on the impact of human activity on biodiversity in the local environment, drawing on the extensive history of the Maasin Watershed with the MIWD and its previous iterations. Around 50 individuals attended the outdoor Youth Camp.
The Eco-Adventure Youth Camp is an annual event facilited by the JBLFMU Community Extension Services (CES) and gathers community youth leaders from all over Iloilo City, Bacolod City and Guimaras for three-day outdoor immersive environmental awareness activities, which include lectures, tests, competition, team building events, coastal cleanups and mangrove plantings.
Other agencies were also in attendance to advocate, for and lecture on environmentalism, such as the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) R6, Nueva Valencia Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (MDRRMC), Guimaras Environment and Natural Resources Office (GENRO), DENR-PENRO Guimaras, and Earthing.ph.
